"What do you want to be when you grow up?" In every entry of the baby book my mother kept, my answer was "Teacher."
My desk, bag, and locker- not at all impeccable, as I was a 'smart but scattered' student. This was frustrating not only for my parents and teachers, but also for me. I was a good student with book smarts, social skills, and a lot of hidden anxiety about what I may have forgotten to do or the project I couldn't bring myself to start. I taught special education and ESL, then supervised candidates in a university teacher preparation program, and teaching has been my life's passion. The responsibility to do right by every learner has been my ultimate motivation. But my best learning has taken place as I live those lessons as a parent, and also as I've reflected on my own areas of scattered strengths and weakness. After my son was diagnosed with ADHD, I spoke with our doctor about my own 'absent minded professor' tendencies, and looked at my struggles to execute mundane tasks, stop procrastinating, and stay organized through a new lens. Every person has a unique neurological profile, and I am happy to be able to inform and support those who are not easily supported by the typical systems around us. For those of use with a learning difference- ADHD, autism, mood disorders, learning disabilities- or 'just' executive functioning challenges, practicing strategies, supports, and self-advocacy can greatly improve confidence and quality of life. |
What is going on in schools? Are we meeting the needs of all students? What questions should we be asking? I love talking to people about topics that add to our understanding of parenting and education, so we can work together to support all learners. I call it "backward planning for adulting" and have a particular passion for increasing independence in twice exceptional students, those with ADHD, autism, anxiety, and executive functioning issues.
