My approach:
I emphasize that metacognition and buy in from the student are extremely important, and focus on building executive functioning and social emotional skills so they are able to advance not only in school, but feel more confident about themselves and their ability to succeed in all aspects of life.
Growth mindset, executive functioning, forming habits, self monitoring/reflection, family dynamics, social emotional skills, and effective communication are all extremely influential in my approach. |
You know and understand your child in a way no one else can. I conduct a thorough intake that can include record reviews, assessment summaries, observations, interviews, student and teacher input, and examines patterns and progress over time. I also ask you to look ahead and identify your expectations, so we can plan backward to increase their readiness for each new step.
Together, through the lenses of both 'functional' and 'academic' performance and growth, we will address the skills your child still needs to learn and the ways they can become more independent with supports and appropriate teaching. I believe providing strong models, giving appropriate feedback, and planning to fade support is effective in making real, lasting progress. I prefer a collaborative approach and communicate clearly the strategy we will use in your unique case, which may include requesting additional evaluations, changes to their IEP, targeted interventions at home and school, and family or individual coaching. Clear expectations and an action plan are key. |
